A beautiful natural lake pigment for painting from the dye found in the cactus-dwelling cochineal. The pigment is reduced from a dye bath with a salt to make it red, ground with a mortar and pestle, and sold in 1/4 ounce containers.

The color has a delicate red to pink range.

The pigment needs a fixative if you are planning to use it on fiber. The photo of the liquid lake pigment is an example using a fixative with a white base.
